Supply Hose Failure in South Rowan?

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

We are the trusted water damage restoration specialists in Cabarrus County!

Monthly Inspections May Prevent Water Damage in South Rowan

At SERVPRO® of North Cabarrus County & China Grove, we’ve responded to many water damage emergencies in South Rowan over the years, and washing machine supply hose failure is a common cause of water damage. The Institute for Business and Home Safety suggests conducting monthly inspections of washing machine supply hoses to prevent water damage:

  • Look for signs the supply hose may be ready to fail—blisters in the hose, worn tubing, stress cracks, or a loose connection.
  • Replace the supply hose with a reinforced steel braided hose if it shows any sign of wear.
  • Tighten the connection if it feels loose. The most common site of failure is near the connection where the hose bends.
  • Replace supply hoses every five years, even if there is no obvious deterioration or wear. Some signs of deterioration may occur from the inside out and may not be visible until it is too late. When replacing washing machine supply hoses, always choose a reinforced steel braided hose over the traditional un-reinforced rubber hose. These hoses will last longer and are far less likely to result in a catastrophic water loss.

A Small Leak Could Be A Big Problem

7/11/2020 (Permalink)

Don't wait and let a small leak cause a big problem.

There’s no such thing as a small disaster, especially when a small leak now can blossom into a big insurance claim later. Unseen water can soak through walls, seep through carpet and pool on subfloors, causing major problems over time. Instead of trusting untrained eyes, help ensure the value of your property and minimize damage by calling SERVPRO of North Cabarrus County & China Grove. We have the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damage sets in. We help small leaks from becoming big problems. Here’s an overview of some of the areas of your property that may be affected by a small leak:

The water damage that you see in your home is a wet surface, most likely a puddle on the carpet. But what you don’t see is that the carpet pad that is under it is completely saturated. It can continue to seep under the baseboards and into the drywall. From there, the water can do further damage to the insulation, as well as the wall stud, and even the sheathing. After the water saturates the carpet pad, it will start to damage the subfloor. If there is a significant amount of water or if it sits unattended for a long period of time, it could potentially damage the floor joists and leak into the basement or damage the foundation. What appeared to be a small problem is a much larger one. Because it’s the water you don’t see that causes the most damage.

When our SERVPRO technicians arrive at your property, they will identify the source of the loss and the type of water. Next, they measure the temperature and humidity to use in the calculations for drying analysis. In order to be thorough, a survey is done to determine the extent of the damage and inspect the premises for hidden moisture. SERVPRO crews will be sure to move any contents from the area as well as block any furniture to avoid any further damage. They will perform emergency water extraction and remove any saturated debris like the carpet, carpet pad or subfloor and drywall if necessary.

So remember to call the professionals at SERVPRO of North Cabarrus County & China Grove at 704-939-1944 when you experience any leak.

5 Common Causes of Water damage

5/30/2018 (Permalink)

5 Common Causes of Water Damage

Rain isn't the main cause of water damage in homes and other buildings. Get to know some of the common causes of water damage so that you can do what you can to prevent it from happening on your property.

  1. Broken Pipes – A broken pipe can do a lot of damage to your home in just a short amount of time. Before you know it, gallons short amount of time. Before you know of water could be spewing through your home. Pay close attention to any leaks, drips, and signs of deterioration. Have a plumber come out to your house for regular maintenance, and if there ever is a broken pipe, you can always turn the water off before the plumber arrives in order to avoid further damage.
  2. Pinhole Leaks – common if a home has copper plumbing, a pinhole leak is a puncture of a copper pipe due to corrosion. If your home has a copper water system, check your pipes for signs of corrosion often.
  3. Old/Faulty Appliances – If your fridge or washing machines aren’t maintained well, or have gotten too old, they could start to leak and create a significant amount of water damage in your home. It’s especially important to keep an eye on the appliances in your kitchen, as water damage caused by your fridge or dish washer can affect not just your floor, but your cabinets as well. Often times, leaks that go undetected for some time will cause significant water damage behind cabinets, which in turn can lead to mold if the problem goes unnoticed for an extended period.
  4. Roof Leaks – We don’t typically see much rain here in Southern California, but when we do, a lot of homeowners tend to suffer water damage due to roof leaks. Check your roofs frequently and take care of any maintenance or repairs while the weather is still sunny. That way you won’t have to worry about your home flooding next time a storm hits.
  5. Accidents – Sometimes luck just isn’t on your side and one tiny mistake can lead to a big problem. A clogged toilet or too much soap in the dishwasher or washing machine can have water coming across your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room. These parts of the home are generally better equipped than the rest of the house to handle a larger spill, but water moves fast and could potentially cause damage to the walls, ceiling, or other rooms in the home. If an accident ever does occur that you think calls for a professional, call SERVPRO of North Cabarrus County & China Grove 704-939-1944 and we’ll make it"Like it never even happened."

Water Damage Emergency Tips

5/30/2018 (Permalink)

What you can do until help arrives?

Water emergencies can happen in the blink of an eye. A small leak can turn into a big leak or busted pipe. And storm water and flooding can turn into a water emergency just as quick.

You must take the proper steps during any water damage situation. Your primary focus should always be safety. First, you must ask, “Is it safe to stay in the house or business?” If the answer is yes, only then, should you locate and shut off the water source if possible. You can also call a qualified professional to help if need be. Next, and equally important, be sure to turn off the circuit breakers for the wet areas in your home or business. But please remember, only do activities that are safe for you to perform. Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are big concerns. Wet materials can be VERY heavy and hazardous. Most importantly, be careful!

Here is a list of some tips to help when experiencing a water damage:

  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting. Don't use your household vacuum to remove water. Leave the water mitigation to the SERVPRO team.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items. Don't use television or other household appliances.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery and cushions. Don't leave wet fabrics in place.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer. Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging
  • Remove colored rugs and items from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art paintings, computers and electronics, documents and other valuables to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors. Don't leave books, magazines on wet carpet or floors.

When the UNEXPECTED water emergency happens, the team at SERVPRO North Cabarrus County & China Grove is here to make it "Like it never even happened."

Winter Weather & Frozen Pipes

2/9/2018 (Permalink)

Winter Weather

Winter weather can wreak all kinds of hazards to your Kannapolis or Concord home or business.  Frozen pipes exposed to cold weather can burst and cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.  Some ways to help prevent frozen pipes include:

  • Opening cabinets door to allow warm air in
  • Leaving a small drip from your faucets
  • Disconnecting outside hoses from your house
  • Draining water from sprinkler lines
How to Thaw Frozen Pipes According to the American Red Cross
  • Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.
  • Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
  • Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.

If winter weather does cause damage to your property, call SERVPRO of North Cabarrus County & China Grove to begin mitigation immediately to limit further damage.
