Experiments with wood-burning crafts, trying to fit extra-large bread in thin toaster slots, and burning lots of candles are best left to people who have lots of outdoor space and who are handy with fire extinguishers.

House fires are no joke. Even small fires can cause serious damage. We hope your house never gets hit by one, and if it does, we hope no one is hurt.

If your home does suffer a fire, you’ll learn what we mean; a lot of damage can arise from a small fire, often more than is first apparent. Many times, the extent of the smoke damage isn’t clear until later.

Remediation of smoke damage requires special equipment and training, which is why most insurance companies pay for professional repairs instead of paying a set amount to homeowners. If a fire causes smoke damage to your home, call us as soon as you can; our emergency services are always available.

Remediation of Fire or Smoke Damage

We’ve written about how much we love watching the do-it-yourself videos for the highs and lows they inspire on the same project. First, there is the high of believing we can rebuild a WWI fighter plane with nothing more than scattered parts, a bottle of glue, and needle-nose pliers. Then there is the realization that there are many more steps and tools involved, all mentioned in passing, and it all ends with the low of realizing we let ourselves be fooled yet again, but hey – we learned something about fighter planes, and that’s all to the good.

Okay, yeah, smoke remediation is NOT the same thing as restoring a WWI fighter plane, but it does require special skills and equipment and training, and it is NOT A DIY PROJECT.

Remediation after a house fire requires, at minimum:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Protective blocks between furniture or structural elements
  • Fans to redirect hazardous fumes
  • Training to determine which materials are or are not salvageable
  • License to dispose of hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of which cleansers to use on particular materials and on particular types of smoke damage
  • Proprietorial cleaners and disinfectants
  • Equipment to remove, not mask, odors

It’s Trivia Time!

This week, the Office of Information We Can’t Possibly Use delved into the world of superheroes and learned about:

The Phantom:

  • First costumed hero: “The Ghost Who Walks”
  • No special powers
  • Wears tights and an eye mask
  • Fights crime
  • Lee Falk created the comic in 1936
